My hubby had surgery on his diverticulitis a week and one day ago. He is now on the mend and is doing quite well. Along with the resection, he also had a fistula which was emptying nasty fecal matter into his bladder. So along with the initial surgery he also had to have his bladder repaired and placement of ureteral stints. The surgery began as a laparascopic surgery which ended up not working because the scar tissue was so extensive. So then they finished the surgery conventionally. He was in surgery for 7 hours but they got everything. The scar tissue was completely removed and bladder was repaired. He is now, 8 days following surgery, having normal BMs and urinating without any problems except for residual swelling from the surgery. His foley catheter was removed before he left the hospital so he is doing way better than I, or he expected. I must also add that he and the doctors were flooded with prayers and well wishes and we can't downplay the importance of that.

He is interested in sharing his experiences.

I posted a comment here yesterday regarding my husbands surgery. I don't see it posted yet. Is it still waiting to be read by the moderators?

I've had colon resection surgery back on April 7 of this year. The doctor removed my sigmoid colon. The surgery was open surgery as I also has a Fistula.Everything went well was out of hospital 7 days after surgery.I'm still finding it difficult figuring out how much fiber is right for me.I find that I'm getting a lot of gas and than a normal bowel movement but also a watery one.I really wish I could figure out what's going on.I do get bloated also. When I get gassy I also get a lot of funny noises in my stomack so don't know if I may also have IBS.I'm trying again to slowly increase my fiber to see what happens.I've also started to drink green tea.Is this happening to nayone else, really wish I could live a normal life without have to worry about needing the bathroom or having gas.Not very pleasant.Take care all. :(

Dear China Beach:

I have also had the follow up symptoms you expressed and still continue to have them after one year of surgery. I was wondering what your ongoing experience has been and what have you done about it. Take care and hope you are feeling better now.

Hi,
Here is my story for anyone who is interested and may be struggling with a desion of whether to have surgery or not, I struggled with that decision for a long time and reading posts on this site helped me sort through all of my concerns and comorted me to know that there are a lot of us out there. Thanks to all who have posted their story.
I have been reading these posts since it was suggested by my doctor to have sureger for recurring bouts of diverticulitis. Initially I was very opposed to surgery but after a few more flare ups and a 2nd and 3rd opinion I gave into the idea my condition may end up in an emergency situation and I was more scared of a having a colostomy than I was of having a resection so I finally opted for the surgery. I had surgery 5 days ago and everything went very well so far. The operation (including insertion of uretal stents) took about 4 hours and it was done laproscopically. 4 small and 1 larger bikini cut incisions. About 8 inches of sigmoid was removed. They put me on a morphine pump afterward and I really wish I had it taken off right away because it gave ne a bad headache and my back hurt quite a bit from the gas used during surgery. Once I came off of the morphine and the cathetar was removed I felt surprisingly good. I was able to get around my hospital room by myself. I was out of bed quite a bit. I was relased from the hospital on day 4 and am now resting comfortably at home. I still feel pretty good, take pain meds to keeps me comfortable and I also take a sleeping pill so that I don't wake up with every noise at night ( I am a light sleeper) because it is a little hard to get back to sleep once awake. I am hopefull and I expect a full recovery. So far , so good. If I experience any problems in the future I will be back to share them otherwise...no news is good news. Good luck to all of you with your flare ups, surgery (if you have it) and recoveries. Thanks again for sharing all of your stories. They really helped me.

Old Irish guy, age 80, had colon resection Dec. 10, 2008. It was a laproscopic procedure. Everything great for about four months when I developed a hernis at the 2" incision lower left side. This was repaired in April, 2009. Then another hernia popped out at my naval and it was repaired in June, 2009. Since June evrything has been wonderful until about Nov. 10, 2009 when I developed hiccups. I feel bloated without eating much. Has anyone experienced any similar side effects? I am calling for the annual colonoscopy tomorrow so I may get some information.. IrishLennon
