Pain in my right side 3 mo. post op...

Postby gizzyluv » Thu Feb 19, 2009 11:57 pm

Hi everyone! I'm new to the site, & am hoping that someone can help me. I had open colon resection surgery (over a foot removed on the left side, plus my appendix) on Nov. 28, 2008, so it hasn't been quite 3 months yet. I had the surgery on Friday the 28th & came home the following Friday, only to have to go BACK to the ER the next morning w/ an obstruction & had to stay until the following Thursday. My recovery has been great, up until 3 or 4 days ago when I began experiencing an 'uncomfortable' feeling in my right side & also around my scar area. I would call it "pain" but only if I press on the specific place...if that makes any sense. I can tell something just isn't right, but it isn't enough pain to make me go to the ER, especially since my husband lost his job & we have no insurance now. Has anyone else had this kind of problem after surgery? I know it takes time for everything to heal, etc. but since I haven't had any problems or pain like this until now I can't help but wonder if it's something new that is happening. My surgeon told me that I still have a few "pockets" (diverticulosis) left throughout the rest of my colon, but he said he doesn't think they will cause me any problems. And the feeling I'm having now certainly isn't like the pain of an attack of diverticulitis. If anyone has any ideas as to what it 'could' be, I would certainly appreciate your input! Thanks in advance! Kris

I have had similar sensations. Read the posts under the topic "Have you had a Colon Resection?" and you will see how others have done in recovery. I had the Sigmoid colon removed as well as the appendix and I did have some sharp pains where my appendix was. When I explain those pains to my surgeon he said "it's not your appendix, I took it out".I still get uncomfortable if I wear my belt to tight, fill my stomach up to much and when I sit in a tight position for very long. It bothered me enough that I talked to my surgeon and GI Doctor about it. I even had Colonoscopy 10 months after surgery. There were no findings that would explain what I was feeling other than a part of the healing and recovery process. Hopefully it will gradually go away. Good luck and let us know how you are doing.

Thank you SO much for your reply...it is good to know I'm not the only one who has gone through this. (although it would be much better if NOONE had to go through it...) I didn't mention this in my other post (because I hadn't felt it in a long time...) but for several years every now & then I get a pain (& when I say "pain" I mean it feels like someone is sticking a hot needle in my side, my right side, right over to the side of my belly button) it's just a very quick pain & sometimes it will happen 2 or 3 times in a row, but it's nothing that is constant. I'm mentioning this 'now' because I have felt that type of pain probably 4 or 5 times today, so this is something else I would like to see if anyone else has experienced before. I have mentioned it to my doctor, my surgeon, even my gynecologist & none of them have ever given me an answer as to what it could be. It's just SO frustrating that I have finally gotten rid of that terrible pain from the diverticulitis in my left side, only to be getting this pain in the other side now. I'm about OVER it all! lol Thanks so much for your help Buckshot! =) If anyone has any idea as to what these pains could be in my right side, I'm all ears. Kris

Has your sugeon checked your Ceacum? The bit where you large and small intestine meets? Apparently it's very rare and goes undetected in many patients but it's what my surgeon discovered in me. Diverticular Disease of the Colon and a perforated Ceacum. Sounds like the pain I had for several months before I went to the doctor.
