Olive Leaf Extract & Probiotic

Postby Tribabe » Fri Jul 25, 2008 12:41 pm

Hi Everyone,

I am new to the site. Not new to the disease, just did not realize what has been wrong with me for YEARS. My first colonoscopy clued me in.

So now that I realize why I am always bloated and in pain............I have started trying to deal with the problem. I have been combing the Internet and found some information that made sense to me. My doctor gave me minimal information of a general nature but not good enough for me to feel good.

I am going to try one thing at a time and see if I get positive results. First up, I am trying a combination of 1 very good quality Probiotic daily and Olive Leaf Extract 3-4 times a day (has antiviral and antibiotic properties). Along with serious attention to what I am actually eating. I have read about taking aleovera in a oral form which supposedly has a phylum type effect - have not tried this yet.

I have read that you really need to be physically active to help the disease. No one is more physically active than me.......I am an Ironman triathlete - 140 miles of fun. Believe me I am still suffering. Be active, it is the best thing in the world but don't expect it to cure you.

Based on what I have read, in terms of what causes this disease, I frankly don't understand why I have it. I never ever eat fried food, eat more fruit and veg than any one I know, always drinking tons of water, exercise an unbelievable amount, am very thin..............I do on the other hand have TONS of work related stress - which I have always felt the exercise helps with. Also, as long as the calories/fat were not bad I never watched what I ate......till now. I don't get it. I am sure a lot of you also don't get it.

Long story short this is my first question.....has anyone else tried these two supplements and had any success?

Second question........when you have a flare up with big time bloating, do you gain a lot of temporary weight with it?

Peace to your belly today :)

Hi,
I too am trying the probiotic and olive leaf extract, but I also take the aloe vera juice. I mainly started the aloe vera juice due to the acid reflux (and hiatal hernia) that I acquired at the same time as divertiulitis. I have been told that I will have to have surgery due to a fistula that has formed on my colon due to a diverticular attack (1st attack May 4th, 08). The olive leaf extract seems to have helped a great deal. I am also taking a generic fiber supplement twice a day. Normally (if anything is normal about this disease) the only times that I have pain are when I have gas or need to go to the bathroom. Everything I read indicates that we should have 25 grams of fiber a day. Even with trying to increase intake of foods with fiber and the fiber supplement I don't believe that I am getting the 25 g of fiber each day. I too have had a problem with getting information about this horrible disease. All the doctors say is "let's do surgery".

You have been taking the probiotic and the olive leaf extract about a month longer than I have. How are you doing now & do you believe they have helped?

I'm totally new to this and am not sure what one has to do to be posted. I answered one query, but it seems to have disappeared!
However... This message resonated with me because I too eat what is supposed to be "all the right stuff". Never expected to get this - in fact hadn't even heard of diverticulitis until I was in Emerg. with it!
I'm wondering if you have ever tried a colon cleansing? I was all set to go ahead with a colonoscopy until a friend (doctor) in Australia said don't even think of having one... Lots of negative info on them.
So... I'm wondering if colon cleansing would be less invasive.
Have you had one, or does anyone know of a good one?
Don't know anything about the 'Olive Leaf Extract, but am taking Acidophalus.
thanx for any help or info.

i would be very interested in hearing why your doctor said you should not have a colonscopy? it is quite a simple procedure and it shows what state your colon is in. i have had this done twice in the last seven years and it was fine. i have irratable bowel syndrome, diverticulitis (recently diagnosed) and have just had a radical hysterectomy due to endemetroisis. Was diagnosed with the diviterculitis after the hysterectomy. i had an abyecss which caused lots of infection. am now recovering from the hysterectomy and all that goes with that (hot flashes etc) and in the throes of trying to avoid any more abycess in the future, primararily by eating lots of fibre, taking acidopholus, and multivitamins. i intend to stop the multiitamins when the course finishes. i also had my gall bladder removed when i was 19 years old (thirty years ago now) and wonder did that contribute to my problems. however if stress is as bad as they say then that would be my number one problem. hae had a lot of stress and am in general someone who worries constantly about everything, bordering on depression. enough of that hae to try and be positive

How does one use this olive leaf extract[/url]? Just take it all the time, or on a schedule?

Thanks...

Hi I'm new to this forum, this is my first post. I have just started a good (and the supposedly good ones seem to be pricey) probiotic because of the myriad of benefits that they seem to have. I am going to look into the olive leaf extract also. I was diagnosed with diverticulitis about 2 years ago and have had several incidents including a "walled off perforation". It's complicated by the fact that I also have diabetes that I manage without meds. It's like walking a tightrope but I like to cook and I like to eat so I try to be inventive. In regards to " Ladybug ", getting enough fiber can be difficult. I found that fiber pills only offered about 2g of fiber each. After reading many labels I found a cereal that offers 14g per 1/2 cup of cereal. One cup and you have a good start to the day. The extra benefit is that if one has diabetes you can deduct the fiber content from the total number of carbs. This leaves me with very few carbs to deal with. If I'm allowed to put the name of the cereal on the post I will. It's really nice to be able to communicate with others who share these problems. It's certainly not a subject most people want to discuss, even family members. Regards from New York

Re: Olive Leaf Extract & Probiotic - how to time the two???

Postby healthytummy » Tue Oct 20, 2009 1:36 am

Hi,
I am new to 'posting' items online but have been diagnosed with Crohn's (although I don't believe it to be accurate diagnosis) and had surgery on my terminal ileum to remove a stricture in November. Anyways, I am trying my best to avoid having to take the killer drugs (As I don't have other symptoms) so am trying everything I know naturally to avoid further issues. So, I have been taking a heavy duty probiotic - Healthy Trinity - along with Olive Leaf Extract and find it has been great for my tummy and overall health. I know this is a site for diverticulitis, but I have read it is possibly related to Crohn's and I haven't been able to find much online re: taking both probiotic and olive leaf but after extensive research in gastro journals, it seemed quite logical.

IF anyone here has advice on how to time taking the two that would be appreciated. I have read on some sites to take one in morning and one at night while other sites say never take during same period of time (i.e. same week, etc..). Additionally am curious if there are any long term negative effects of staying on both?

Any advice? (and, if so,please note if it is from trial/error, dr. advice, naturopath please)

Best wishes to you all. Thanks :)
