Flagyl Antibiotic Tip for Tolerance

Postby MagicMan » Sat Jan 10, 2009 1:43 pm

Hi Folks,

This is my first time here. 42 years old, in great shape but in the middle of another flare up. I keep telling myself one more attack, one more attack and then I will have the surgery. Well, this is it. I am going to Disney World for a week in February with my family and having the surgery when I get back. This sucks. I will say that reading the posts in the surgry section has helped to put me in a better frame of mind. Thanks.

Anyway, we all know that Flagyl tastes horrible and is sometimes sickening to the taste buds and the metallic after taste can last all day long. I have found the solution to this and has made my 10 days of antibitotics tolerable.

I purchased some Fruit Roll Ups and cut it into small 1 inch by 1 inch squares. I wrap the Flagyl in the fruit roll up and it keeps it from touching my tongue. Hence, no bad taste and or after taste in my mouth. Try it, it works.

Also, Keep in mind that they have given Flagyl to alcoholics to keep them from drinking booze. Flagyl reacts badly with alcohol and I had experienced this once while rinsing with mouthwash. I did not know what was making me ill until my doctor asked what kind of toothpaste I used. I now use children's toothpaste and make sure that I have no products containing alcohol while on Flagyl.

Hope this helps, bye for now and God Bless all of us sufferers of this painful and anxiety producing condition.

Hey I was like you and suffered to the point that surgery was the only option I also had great difficulty taking Flagyl as it was almost intolerable and effected my cognitive state to the point that I could hardly get out of bed
I read about Aloe Vera and thought I would try that
The result was absolutely outstanding and I found the effect in terms of relief was incredible
I am now effectively free from the symptoms of this disease and eat and live normal again
If I have a sign of a flare the Aloe Vera quickly puts me back to normal
I have now gone from deaths door to living without symptoms and can eat chilli and anything without effect

interesting tips, thanks all for that i came down with divericulitus in sept 09, it has pretty much been an ongoing attack since then, i have had a couple of short reprives during this time but they havnt last much more than a week after being somewhat disapointed with the so called specialist i went for a second opinion, straight up he says i need surgery and should be on a/b,s until then, has anyone come across this? reason i ask is that flaygl makes me sick as, ruins appetite ect but will try some of these tips as i have put off getting the a/b,s due to the way they make me feel

I'm another true believer in aloe, so I'll mention what has been working for me for the last few months (I recommend it every chance I get on these boards!). I use Lily of the Desert brand whole-leaf aloe gel, which you can find in the refrigerated section of your natural food store or pharmacy. This company has a liquid form, too, but I definitely prefer the gel. You take it once or twice a day, stirring 2 oz. of it into juice. The gel is thick and clear and is essentially tasteless, though it does have an odd astringent smell to it. Don't be turned off by its oddness. It soothes your innards and helps with BMs. It even seems to remove stuck debris (such as green onions that were in soup). And I have read that the aloe helps absorption of nutrients and vitamins.

My choice of juice these days is the Glaceau brand VitaminWater juice. Other people with this condition find pineapple and cranberry juice helpful, but I find them irritating, and of course apple juice is constipating and orange juice also irritates. Pure grape juice is good, if you can find it. You can mix the juices, too, of course.

I also have a tip for Flagyl or other antibiotic tolerance: chew crystallized ginger. That helps both with the taste and with the nausea. Be aware that ginger can irritate your bladder, so don't think that you're getting a UT infection. When you stop eating the ginger, the bladder irritation stops. And though the crystallized ginger can seem stringy, it isn't fiber and won't cause problems. Chew it very well, as you should be chewing everything you eat with this condition.
