surgery due

Postby beanjar » Wed May 09, 2007 6:41 pm

Hi there, I am due to have surgery in the next few days to remove part of the diseased colon, I have undergone all the usual checks and they have found that it would be best to remove it whilst I am relatively young ! (56)
I shall update this post once I have had the op to let those who are in the same situation how thing go.

Cheers

Exactly why I am writing....to better inform others.
I am 59 and had acute diverticulitis after Christmas with no previous attacks or symptoms. It put me in the hospital for 3 days. When things didn't clear up after anti-biotics, I tried a procedure to drain the infections- another 3 days in the hospital and more aniti-biotics. That didn't work either so I had surgery in Feb.
18 inches and an overy which had been enwrapped by the abscess.
were removed. Liquids, then soft food, then after six days I went home. After another week, I was back at work. It was about a month before I felt like eating and drinking as usual. Now after 3 months, I feel so good, I nearly forget that I ever had a problem.
I hope your experience goes as well as mine. :D

Hi There Beanjar giving you an update;

I went into Hospital for the op on Monday 14th may, after a chat with the nurse re the possibility of a 'stoma' I was marked up in case during the op i needed one, terrfying thought, but once your under and they start you cannot dictate what happens.
Went down for the op at 4.00pm, back on ward by 8.00pm after my visit to recovery, well they have managed to do it by 'keyhole' and remove about 12" of my colon, my surgeon said it was a close thing re the stoma, but he was happy the way things went.
The following day they got me out of bed for a wash, lose your dignity or what, very sore and some pain, same for the next couple of days, but managed to get up and walk to the shower on Thursday, had a bad night on Thursday not much sleep, but think it was because I'd come off the morphin, Friday told me i could go home !! really thought it was too soon as I still had discomfort, but as they kept on reminding me, what do you expect you've just had major surgery, albiet keyhole it is still major. Still waiting for the first bowel movement (Sat), but they were just happy i had passed wind, still concerned every time i move as you think you are going to 'pop' open, hopefully I will get stronger (both physically and mentally) but will keep you all updated. My son and his girlfriend have been brilliant, as have all my friends, sadly my partner hasn't been as she saw fit to go away the day after my op for a pre-arranged course, but that is another story..make sure you have a good nework of family and friends for support very important. Take care all

Hi there Beanjar,

It's so good to hear that your surgery went well. And very good to know that no stoma was needed! I hope you continue to recover well.

Thinking of you. :)

Hi Lisa

Many thanks, hopefully I will get there eventually, it does worry you though when you read stories of people who are virtually back to normal within two weeks and back to work in four, best we remind ourselves everyone is different, so as long as we don't exepct too much too soon recovery will come along.

yes everyone is different, I know that I thought I was okay to help with some things, like the ceiling fan, but-nope. I had for that for 3 days in abdominal pain. Its hard but I find this forum and the wonderful people in it really help but offering some advice, atleast get the comfort in knowing that they have the same disease and know what we are going through. its great to make new friends.........lisa

follow up from surgery

Postby beanjar » Wed May 30, 2007 10:42 pm

Hi

Latest update from Beanjar:
After surgery on the 14th may, it is now the 30th May, 16 days on and I have just have the exterior staples removed. I still have some discomfort on the lower right side, but according to the surgeon, that is to be expected, as he said " it is only just over two weeks it will take time". I find I can get about reasonably well, but I am still very careful not to over do it, no point in trying to run before you can walk so to speak.
I asked about those claims of people who are fully functional again after just two weeks, he said everyone is different, but he advised against doing too much too early I must say I agree with him. By the way my surgeon is a specialist in the field of Laproscopic surgery and is extremely qualified in the op he carried out, so I have nothing but respect for his advice and comments.
Still have erratic bowel movement (sorry !!) but hopefully this will settle down in time. I am still on Low Residue diet to allow time for things to settle, but my appetite is pretty good and no beer or wine for over 3 weeks, really good for the weight tho.
Good luck to those of you who are waiting re surgery, if i can be of any help or comfort just ask, I know first hand how worrying it all is.

Cheers Beanjar (recipe available, but definately not recommended until sorted out )

Hi Everyone :)

I found out that I had this condition last year with an emergency surgery which resulted in a colostomy, luckily 6 months later it was reversed. I was not aware that I had to watch my diet at the time, so I recently had another attack and landed in the hospital for a few days with antibiotics and so forth :x

I am so glad to have found this site, it's good to hear that some of things I am experiencing are normal. Any advice woud be appreciated, my doctor did not inform me too much in my opinion.

Joanne :)

hi jojo and others

if our condition is shared by 50% of the older population there must be a lot of antibiotics consumed. all my life i have been told they are no good

anyone know if garlic takes the place of antibiotics?
