Diverticulitis and Low Fiber
All this fiber, low high, confusing? Yes it can be.
The low fiber diet is for when you have a problem, for when your in pain.
Why?
The high fiber diet keeps things moving. Keeps things clean. The fiber in a high fiber diet, really sort of scrubs the walls of your intestine to keep them clean. However, if you have an inflammation the fiber will still scrub. It will scrub the sore spot as well as the not sore spot.
This means that the high fiber will scrub something inflamed and make it worse.
For example. You've been out in the garden all day and have a cut on one hand. When you come inside and clean up, taking a scrubbing brush to the hand that is OK (has no cut) will not hurt. But taking the scrubbing brush to the had that is cut, WILL hurt and hurt a lot.
The fiber is the scrubbing brush. The cut is an inflammation in your Diverticuli (ie you have full blown Diverticulitis and may even be on Antibiotics). Having a diet high in fiber will be harsh, taking a scrubbing brush to the already sore and inflamed Diverticuli. This will not help, and will make things worse.
So when your in pain, you need to throw the scrubbing brush away. Back off the fiber. Get onto a low fiber or no fiber diet.
That will allow your body to heal that area without the constant irritation of being scrubbed.
Fiber is often found in the skins of foods. If your to have a low fiber diet. Then you will be removing the skins of foods. Like apples and potatoes. Most of the insoluble fiber (the scratchy stuff) is contained in the skins.
You will need to learn the difference between high and low fiber and where it is found. These are the sort of things that we cover in the End Diverticulitis Reference.
